The Phaistos Disc compared with Linear A
|
The search for analogies is based on two non-dependent criteria - formal similarities between the characters and their preferred position in the words. Since as a rule the position of a character depends on its meaning as regards content and not on its formal design, the selected method of procedure aims to minimise accidentally positive or misleading results.
Statistical data for Linear A after Giulio M. Facchetti (Facchetti, 1999: Statistical data and morphematic elements in Linear A. In: Kadmos, Volume XXXVIII, No. 1, pp. 1 - 11).
Similarities for the characters as noted by Jerome Eisenberg (Eisenberg, 2008: The Phaistos Disk - a one hundred-year-old hoax? In: Minerva, the International Review of Ancient Art and Archaeology, Volume 19.4, pp. 9 - 24).

* (I)nitial sign (to more then 39% in initial position)***; (F)inal sign (to more then 39% in final position)***; (f)requent sign (Linear A: frequency more then 2.5%; Phaistos Disk frequency more then 3%); (r)are sign (frequency less then 1%).
** There is a remarkably usage for the next to last position for some signs of the Phaistos Disc.

The number for the next table are calculated with the formula for the hypergeometric distribution. After Facchetti 80 different signs can be count. 18 initial and 25 final signs. 18 signs have a frequency more then 2.5% and 45 signs have a frequency less then 1%.

Numerous parallels with Linear A can be found. Characters which are formally similar are not infrequently in the same word positions in both scripts. This "affinity" enables the assumption to be made that the Phaistos Disc script is a stamp script in conformity with Linear A!
